Preventive Care

Preventive care & screenings

We’ve always focused on helping our members avoid health issues or catch them before they become serious. Our electronic medical record is one key to that. Any Kaiser Permanente provider you see can let you know when you’re due for a screening, because the system tracks your care.

With Kaiser Permanente, you’ll have coverage for the same preventive services you get through TRICARE Prime: https://tricare.mil/HealthWellness/Preventive. external link.  You’ll just receive them from our Permanente providers.

Specialty Care & Inpatient Hospital Care

Specialty care

You and your family will be in good hands if you get sick or need specialty care. Your primary care doctor can connect you with our carefully-selected experts in more than 40 specialties — most without a referral. This includes everything from maternity and pediatrics, to behavioral health, to specialists who treat serious issues like heart problems and cancer.

Your care will be personalized because your specialty care team will have access to your health history. They’ll also be connected to the latest medical advances and best practices to help you recover quickly.

Inpatient hospital care

You’ll have access to some of Atlanta’s most well-respected hospitals when you need inpatient care—such as a surgery, procedure, or other elective care. This includes Emory Midtown and Emory Saint Joseph’s Hospital, where you’ll get care from a Kaiser Permanente doctor who has access to your medical record. You’ll also have access to Northside Hospital, Piedmont Hospital, Gwinnett Medical Center, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Athens Regional Medical Center. (Your personal physician will decide which facility is best for you.)

For medical emergencies, you have access to any hospital emergency room, even if it’s not affiliated with Kaiser Permanente.

Care Away from Home

As a Kaiser Permanente TRICARE Prime option member, you’re covered wherever you go around the world. From emergency and urgent care, to questions for your doctor, you’ll have many options when it comes to accessing care while away.

Emergency care1

If you have a medical emergency and are in the United States, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital. Outside the U.S., go right to the nearest hospital or place where you can get the medical care you need. If you’re admitted to a non-Kaiser Permanente hospital, we ask that you or the hospital contact us within 24 hours of admission to enable the coordination of your care.

Urgent care2

Getting urgent care at a Kaiser Permanente facility

Kaiser Permanente provides care in many states across the country including all or parts of California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland, Oregon, Virginia, Washington, Washington, D.C.

If you have an urgent medical condition while traveling outside of Georgia that isn’t an emergency and are in a Kaiser Permanente service area, you can visit any Kaiser Permanente facility that has urgent care or after-hours services without a referral. Just call us 24/7, toll-free at 1-833-642-5973 to get nurse advice on the best way, and best location to get the care you need. Please note that when you’re outside of Georgia, Kaiser Permanente urgent care contracted providers (those which are not inside a Kaiser Permanente facility) will be out of network unless they’re also TRICARE-authorized.

Getting urgent care at a military hospital or clinic or TRICARE network provider

If a Kaiser Permanente facility is not easily accessible, you can get urgent care at a military hospital or clinic (if space is available). If neither a Kaiser Permanente facility nor a military hospital or clinic is available, you can visit any TRICARE-authorized urgent care center or network provider without a referral.

Filling an urgent care prescription

If you’re traveling and receive urgent care at a Kaiser Permanente facility, a military hospital or clinic, a TRICARE network provider and need medication, you can have the prescription filled where you get care or at the nearest TRICARE retail network pharmacy.

If you receive out-of-network care, you can fill your urgent care prescription at a military hospital or clinic pharmacy, or TRICARE retail network pharmacy. If you must get your medication at a non-network pharmacy, you may have to pay full price for your prescription drugs and file a pharmacy claim. external link with Express Scripts (ESI) for reimbursement.

Non-urgent care

While away from home, you can email your doctor’s office with non-urgent questions, have a phone/video visit with a Kaiser Permanente physician, or connect with a licensed care provider 24/7 for medical advice.

If you need to see a doctor when you’re in another Kaiser Permanente service area for a non-urgent visit, call us toll-free at 1-833-642-5973 and we’ll help you get a special Health/Medical Record number to use in the area you’re visiting, as well as information for making an appointment.

For non-urgent care outside the Kaiser Permanente network, you can visit a military hospital or clinic (if space is available). You can also go to any TRICARE network provider, but point-of-service charges may apply.

Filling non-urgent prescriptions

If you’re traveling and are in a Kaiser Permanente service area, you can fill your prescription at a Kaiser Permanente facility pharmacy. Call us toll-free at 1-833-642-5973 and we can help you find a location.

If you’re not in a Kaiser Permanente service area, you can fill your prescription one time at any military pharmacy or TRICARE retail network pharmacy. If a TRICARE retail network pharmacy isn’t available, you can get your medication refilled at a non-network pharmacy, but you’ll have to pay full price for your prescription drugs and file a claim for reimbursement. 3
